You have 1 full business day to cancel
When you book a case on Off The Record (OTR), you get 1 full business day to change your mind. If you cancel during that window, you pay nothing. You do not need to give a reason.
Here is how the money side works: when you book, OTR does not charge your card right away. We place a hold on your card for the expected amount, and the funds are only withdrawn once an attorney accepts your case. If you cancel within the window and the funds have not been withdrawn yet, we simply release the hold — the pending charge disappears from your statement, and you were never charged at all. If the funds were already withdrawn, you receive a full refund of everything, including your legal fee and your OTR service fee. Either way, you can read what to expect on your statement.
For example, if you book on a Friday at 1 PM, your cancellation window stays open until Monday at 1 PM. Weekends do not count toward the 1-business-day window.
✅ Cancel within 1 business day and you pay nothing. No questions asked.
If your card only has a hold on it, the hold is simply released. If the funds were already withdrawn, you receive a full refund of both your legal fee and the OTR service fee.
How to cancel
To cancel your case, open your case in the OTR app or website and follow the steps to request a cancellation. If you run into any trouble, contact our support team and we will help.
What if you have unanswered questions?
When you book, your attorney may start reviewing your case right away. If you are not sure about moving forward, ask your questions in the case chat as soon as possible after booking.
If you ask a question and your attorney does not answer before the cancellation window closes, we will extend the window for you. You will still be able to cancel at no cost once the attorney responds—if the answer is not to your satisfaction.
However, once your question is answered, you must act quickly. If you intend to cancel after receiving the answer, you must either cancel the case yourself through the app or website, or notify your attorney and the OTR support team that you want to cancel. If you do not take action after your question has been answered, the extended window will close and the standard no-refund policy will apply.
For this extension to apply, your questions must be asked in the case chat. Be clear about what matters to you. For example, you could tell your attorney right away: "I only want to move forward if I will not have to appear in court."
💡 Your cancellation window is automatically extended
If you ask your attorney a question in the case chat and the attorney has not responded before the window closes, your window stays open until you get an answer.
What happens after the cancellation window closes?
Once the 1-business-day window passes (and you have no unanswered questions in the case chat), the cancellation window is closed. You can still choose to stop your case at any time, but you would not receive a refund of your legal fee.
This is because your attorney may have already started working on your case. The cancellation window protects both you and your attorney.
Time-sensitive cases
If your case is urgent—for example, you have a court date in the next day or two—your attorney may ask you to waive the cancellation window so they can begin working on it right away.
Waiving the cancellation window is always your choice. If you agree to waive it, you would not receive a full refund if you later decide to cancel. Your attorney will explain this before you agree.
Tips for a smooth experience
- Ask questions early
If anything is unclear, use the case chat right after you book. Questions asked in the case chat protect your cancellation window.
- Be clear about your expectations
Let your attorney know what matters most to you from the start. For example: "I need to know whether I will have to appear in court before I commit."
- Check your messages
Your attorney may reach out with important updates or questions shortly after you book. Responding promptly helps your case move forward.
